Hoover Vikings vs. Perry Panthers

2010 District Round Two

Veldhuizen-Fausnight Duo Too Much for Panthers

74-56

HOOVER 74, PERRY 56. Hoover’s trapping pressure and the inside duo of Cory Veldhuizen and Tyler Fausnight were too much for Perry in Saturday’s second game. The Panthers jumped out to leads of 9-2 and 13-7 in the first quarter of this physical affair. But Veldhuizen scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the first three minutes of the second quarter as Hoover took the lead for good. (CantonRep.com)

Hoover Vikings vs Cardinal Mooney

A Cold Night For The Cardinals

81-49

HOOVER 81, CARDINAL MOONEY 49. The snowstorm may have slowed the arrival of the Hoover Vikings basketball team on Friday at Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, but Nyles Evans and the rest of the team was in high gear on the court throughout the night. A rowdy, yet entertaining Mooney student section had little effect on the high-powered Hoover offense.

Hoover Vikings vs St. Vincent St. Mary's

St. V Ruins Hoover Senior Night

71-67 (OT)

ST. V 71, HOOVER 67 (OT). Scratch the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish off the invitation list. They are nothing but party poopers. The Irish came to the “Win Tunnel” at North Canton Hoover High School and took down the Vikings, 71-67, in overtime on Tuesday, marking the second consecutive night St. V ruined a state-ranked opponent’s Senior Night. Hoover Vikings vs Jackson Polar Bears

Federal League Playoffs Finals

Jackson Captures Fedral League Title

63-44

JACKSON 63, HOOVER 44. The Federal League trophy wasn’t on the line Saturday night. But blood was on the Memorial Civic Center floor. After having their league and district dreams dashed by Hoover last year — both times at the Civic Center — the Polar Bears exorcised some demons Saturday in a game that had as much to do with diving for loose balls as it did execution. Hoover Vikings vs Louisville Leopards

Hoover Taps Reserve Energy to Turn Back Louisville

69-34

HOOVER 69, LOUISVILLE 34. Their moments of glory usually are reserved for practices. Tuesday night, though, that changed for several of the bench players on the powerful Hoover High School boys basketball team. Subs Chad Feinberg, Dom Iero, A.J. Sarbaugh and Austin Appleby sparked the Vikings to a 69-34 rout of visiting Louisville. Their work over the final six minutes of the third quarter broke open the game. (CantonRep.com)

Hoover Vikings at Mckinley Bulldogs

Federal League Playoffs Round Two

Hoover Leads Start to Finish In Win Over Mckinley

68-60

HOOVER 68, MCKINLEY 60. No offense to the McKinley Bulldogs, but the Hoover High School boys basketball team served a reminder Friday night of why it is one of the alpha dogs in the area basketball scene. “It’s a big statement, not only to others, but to ourselves,” Hoover junior point guard Nyles Evans said after the Vikings led from start to finish in a 68-60 win during the semifinals of the Federal League tournament. (CantonRep.com)

Hoover Vikings vs Lake Blue Streaks

Federal League Playoffs Round One

Hoover Leaves It All Out On The Court

73-49

HOOVER 73, LAKE 49. A lopsided scoreboard and a win in the Federal League boys basketball tournament well in hand, Nyles Evans didn’t have to much to play for it seemed. But in the middle of the third quarter Thursday night, the Hoover High School junior left a little bit of his skin at midcourt. Evans dived for a loose ball. “That speaks to his character and this team’s character,” Hoover head coach Randy Montgomery said after the Vikings breezed past Lake, 73-49. (CantonRep.com)

Hoover Vikings vs Glenoak Eagles

Veldhuizen Sets Tone For Hoover In Win

71-60

HOOVER 71, GLENOAK 60. Here’s guessing GlenOak teacher Evan Veldhuizen’s popularity is about to take a hit. “His students were joking that they were going to ignore him,” said Veldhuizen’s son, Cory, who happens to wear the black and orange of GlenOak’s rival, Hoover High School. The students won’t have much to say. Not after Cory Veldhuizen’s tough-guy effort led Hoover to a 71-60 Federal League win Friday night. The son of the math teacher went for big numbers (25 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots) on an evening 2,000 fans braved the wintery elements to watch some physical boys basketball. Hoover Vikings at Boardman Spartans

Hoover Defense Handcuffs Spartans

Hoover Vikings vs. John Adams Rebels

Hoover Cruises To Victory At Home Over Rebels

66-44

HOOVER 66, JOHN ADAMS 44. After a physical and emotional loss to rival Jackson on Friday night, Hoover cruised to an easy victory at home against visiting Cleveland John Adams. Cory Veldhuizen led the Vikings with 16 points and Dan Daugherty added 14 points. Tyler Fausnnight pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Vikings, and many of the starters played limited minutes in the lopsided contest.

Friday, Jan. 22, 2010

Hoover Vikings at Jackson Polar Bears

Jackson Wins Wild One

59-56 (OT)

HOOVER 56, Jackson 59 (OT). Friday night started as a chess match, with Hoover head coach Randy Montgomery and the Vikings playing the role of Kasparov. Then, this highly anticipated boys high school basketball game evolved into a street fight. Last team standing wins. The Jackson Polar Bears somehow walked out of their gym with a 59-56 overtime win in a tense matchup of Federal League and state powers that had fans, players, and coaches looking for some aspirin afterward. Hoover Vikings vs. Cincinnati Withrow Tigers

Mercy Medical Center Classic

Hoover Shows No Mercy for Withrow

69-46

HOOVER 69, CINCINATTI WITHROW 46. After a rare loss at home to Mckinley on Friday night, Hoover took out some of its frustration on visiting Cincinnati Withrow at the Mercy Medical Center Classic at Hoover High School. Cory Veldhuizen scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Vikings.

Hoover Vikings vs. Mckinley Bulldogs

Mckinley Knocks Off State Ranked Hoover

59-53

MCKINLEY 59, HOOVER 53. A win at Hoover is nice, but head coach Greg Malone and his McKinley Bulldogs weren’t about to get picky Friday night.“It feels great, but after last weekend I would have taken a win in the parking lot,” Malone said of the Bulldogs’ 59-53 boys basketball win in front of more than 2,000 fans at Hoover High School. Hoover Vikings at Perry Panthers

Hoover Remains Unbeaten

61-52

HOOVER 61, Perry 52.
They didn’t come into the Perry Gymnasium expecting anything easy Friday night. But after five straight road games, the Hoover Vikings know a thing or two about finding ways to win boys basketball games — even if they’re not hitting on all cylinders. The Vikings stayed undefeated by pounding out a 61-52  Federal League win over Perry. (CantonRep.com)

70-64

HOOVER 70, DETROIT CASS TECH 64.  Hoover junior point guard Nyles Evans scored 30 points and took home MVP honors for the game as the Vikings defeated Detroit Cass Tech at the Motor City Classic in Michigan.“It was a great point guard display in all aspects by Nyles,” Hoover head coach Randy Montgomery said. “He scored in a lot of different ways. He was a floor general. He got his teammates involved. He had a textbook game tonight.” (CantonRep.com)

Hoover Uses Big Fourth Quarter to Top Massillon

73-54

HOOVER 73, Massillon 54. Five games into the 2009-10 season, the Hoover High School boys basketball team looks like a finished product. But listen to the Vikings talk, and the work is just beginning. “I like the way we’re playing right now, but we got to focus on getting better,” Hoover senior forward Cory Veldhuizen said after the Vikings dominated the fourth quarter of a 73-54 win at Massillon on Tuesday night. Hoover Vikings vs. Fitch Falcons

Falcons No Match For Vikings

74-31

HOOVER 74, FITCH 31. The North Canton Hoover High School boys basketball team was running on all four cylinders last night as they ran over the Austintown Fitch Falcons in a mid-week matchup. The lopsided score throughout the game did not steer the Vikings off track as they played aggressive defense and precision offense all night. The game served as an opportunity to give a number of players varsity experience in the second half.

Hoover Vikings vs. Lake Blue Streaks

Veldhuizen Keys Hoover Win Over Lake

58-46

HOOVER 58, LAKE 46. North Canton Hoover High School boys basketball head coach Randy Montgomery likened Friday’s Federal League opener to a sparring match between two heavyweights. Montgomery’s Vikings outlasted the Lake Blue Streaks in a physical, defensive basketball game, 58-46.
“We were really unselfish tonight,” Hoover senior Cory Veldhuizen said. “Our team defense was really good, we played tough, and we got a win.”  Veldhuizen camped down low for much of the night, scoring on layups and jump hooks. The 6-foot-5 post player led the Vikings with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists.
